Sevenoaks has long drawn people who work in London and want space, a station and Knole on the doorstep. That combination — established careers, property held for a long time, and money moving between generations — tends to bring the inheritance tax conversation forward compared with the rest of the county.
For a lot of Sevenoaks households the estate has grown past the nil-rate bands largely through the house, without anyone ever deciding to become an inheritance tax case. The useful work is mostly unglamorous: understanding what the residence nil-rate band actually gives you and when it starts to taper away, what gifting does and doesn’t achieve, whether a trust earns the complexity it brings, and how pensions sit within the estate — which changes from April 2027, when most unused pension funds are brought into the inheritance tax net. We’ve written a plain-English guide to that change.
Alongside that sit the themes that come with higher earnings rather than with Sevenoaks specifically: annual allowance tapering, what to do with bonus or equity income, and school fees — which reward being planned for years ahead rather than found each term.

Do you actually need all of the income?
Where there’s more pension than lifestyle requires, drawing it down isn’t automatically the right move — particularly with the 2027 change to how unused funds are treated. The sequence in which you spend different pots is a decision in its own right.
Is the gifting you’re already doing being recorded?
Regular gifts out of surplus income can be genuinely useful, but the exemption depends on evidence. Households that have been helping children for years are often already qualifying without documenting it.
Does the will still match the plan?
Estate planning and will drafting are separate exercises that need to agree with each other. We don’t draft wills, but we’ll tell you plainly when yours looks out of step with what you’re trying to achieve.
Financial advice in Sevenoaks: common questions
Is my estate likely to face inheritance tax?
If you own a home in Sevenoaks outright and hold pensions or investments alongside it, it’s worth checking rather than assuming. The answer depends on your circumstances, which is what a first conversation is for.
Do you work with our solicitor or accountant?
Regularly, and it usually produces a better result. Estate planning that ignores the will, or tax planning that ignores the investments, tends to leave gaps.
Do you advise on school fees planning?
Yes — as part of a wider plan rather than a standalone product. The question is normally where the money comes from and what it costs the rest of the plan.
